Year 3 Urban Theory, Analysis and Design

A four week sketch design project for student accommodation incorporating a public element in the heart of Edinburgh.

The site was in a sensitive, historic context, with the North side facing directly to the Castle and the South looking to the Grassmarket.

Having visited Venice shortly before this project commenced, I was inspired by the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza, and the public/private dynamic created by the inhabited vaults, acting as a semi-enclosed street beneath the main hall.
